November 2005 - Research In Motion Ltd., maker of BlackBerry handheld telecom devices, announced today it will establish a $230-million technical support centre in the Halifax area — a move hailed by some observers as the most significant outside investment in Nova Scotia in 30 years.
October 11, 2006 - Regional council paved the way Tuesday night for an Ontario company to build a $230-million technical support centre that will employ 1,200 people. Research In Motion, the makers of wireless hand-held computer cellphones called BlackBerrys, chose a 20-hectare property in Bedford once slated for a blood-processing plant. In order to get its Halifax-area headquarters underway, the company needed council to amend the Bedford West Secondary Planning Strategy. Coun. Gary Martin (Bedford) said Halifax stands to benefit if RIM goes ahead with its plans...
December 20, 2006 - EllisDon Halifax has been awarded a $28.4 million Construction Management contract for the Research In Motion - Customer Support Operations Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The building will consist of approximately 160,000 square feet of gross floor area and is characterized as an office building. The building is divided into two wings with a central core. The west wing commences one storey above the east wing with no basement under either wing. The west wing is five storeys and the east wing is four storeys. Construction will commence January 2, 2007 and is slated for completion in February, 2008.
Since these three announcements were heard, residents of Hammonds Plains/Bedford have watched patiently as the multi-million buidling was erected in Bedford West. It appears from afar that the building is complete and it looks amazing. A beautiful location to work.
This is an amazing opportunity for the HRM. With an insurgence of IT personnel, there will be a demand for housing in the immediate area to Bedford West. In addition, there will be a trickle effect that will benefit all sectors - convenience stores, grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, doctors, dentists...the list goes on. We need to be prepared for this exciting time.
